InterViso DD/D Builder (IVBuild)

Data Integration Inc.

With InterViso DD/D Builder an enterprise can:application program developersThe InterViso data dictionary/directory (DD/D) builder (IVBuild) acceptsdescriptions of exiting databases and/or files and assists a DBA indeveloping a unified schema. This is a domain driven building processthat seeks to discover the semantic match between data elements stored indifferent databases independent of the data element names and structures. It handles inconsistencies between data elements of the same domain suchas different names, different units, and different storage structures. It locates data records where the data may be replicated in differentdatabases or partitioned across databases. If data element standardsexist, it develops the unified schema according to the standards. The input to IVBuild is schema information about existing databases whichmay be read from DDL, including SQL, IDMS, IMS or Focus DDL, and dataelement standards. IVBuild then interacts with the DBA through a seriesof forms that are used to enter additional information for each recordand field. The records are labeled with descriptions and updateconstraints. The fields are labeled with the data element standard thatapplies, the domain (meaning), units (such as dollars, yen, or pounds fora money field), case (upper, lower, or mixed for a character field), anda description. IVBuild will verify the consistency of the information asit is entered and prompt for clarification if there is incomplete orinconsistent input. The federated view is a standardized view across the existing databases. As a first step, IVBuild will standardize each table. Tables indifferent databases that have overlapping sets of domains are identifiedso that the DBA may determine if the tables contain redundant data orfragmented data or data that may be joined. Differences in structure arethen resolved interactively.Transformations may be defined that include select, project, and join ontables; and string manipulation, arithmetic conversion, value encoding, and function transformation of fields. Virtual fields may be definedwith constants or derived from other fields. This program may be used to design one or more new relational databasesfrom existing data descriptions (relational or not) and from new datarequirements. It may also be used to develop the DD/D to drive theInterViso federated database front-end, IVQuery, where the data is to beaccessed in the existing databases. The IVBuild runs under SunOS(TM) or Solaris(R) workstations and storesthe DD/D in Oracle, Sybase, or Ingres on the same or a differentcomputer. The user interface uses X-windows. Several standard reportsare provided and SQL create statements may be generated for the federatedview. Programs and queries may be written by the user to generateadditional reports from the DD/D.
